It evaluates whether a material used in an electrical or electronic product resists ignition and fire spread when exposed to a simulated overheated component, at a defined temperature and duration.

The PE 8000 is built to meet IEC 60695 and IS 11000, the standards used for glow wire flammability and fire hazard testing.

The glow wire tip temperature is measured over 0 to 1200 °C using a K-type thermocouple, with 1 °C resolution and ±0.5% ±1 count accuracy.

A variac-controlled test current of up to 200 A at 0–6 V AC heats the wire, with PID or ON/OFF control maintaining the required test temperature.

A motorized wire-movement mechanism and a temperature-controlled chamber can both be added to the standard apparatus.
